Did you know that the Butler City Police Department K9 program is 100% funded by donations? This includes, dogs, veterinarian visits, food, vehicles, vests and other equipment.
Chooch's handler is Lieutenant Brian Grooms. Chooch is a Belgian Malinois who began his 3 month training period in late 2019. Chooch completed his training and began patrolling the City in January 2020. Chooch participates in ongoing training at facilities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, twice a month.
Rico's handler is Officer Andrew Niederlander. Rico is a Belgian Malinois / German Shepherd mix who began his 3 month training period in late 2019. Rico completed his training in January 2020. Rico began patrolling the City shortly afterward. Rico participates in on going training at facilities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, twice a month.
Gunner's handler was Lieutenant Brian Grooms. Gunner had been with the police department for several years. On Thursday, December 27, 2018 in the evening, Gunner seemed to be feeling ill. Gunner was taken to the veterinarian. The veterinarian found that Gunner had several irreparable internal issues. Gunner was laid to rest at the hospital.
Many of the K9 uniforms have some type of K9 patch on one or more sleeve. This makes it easier to identify them as a K9 Officer.

Doug Houlscher and Herb Cratty delivered a donation to the K9 fund. The funds were obtained via the Butler's Back the Blue 5K and 2 mile walk at Alameda Park on 5/2/22. The 2 posed with Lieutenant Grooms, K9 Chooch and Officer Niederlander, K9 Rico.

The Butler City Police Department would like to thank the members of American Legion Post 117 for their donation to the Butler City K9 fund. Commander James F. Dittmer presented Chief Robert O'Neill with a check for $5,000.00 to go toward the fund. The department is thankful for the support of this generous Butler City organization.
